Hive is a circle practice in collaborative voice, rhythm and movement. There is a technical, skill-building layer; a mental-emotional attunement-building layer; and a deeper layer beyond words that can emerge when the group arrives in authentic coherence. We will practice vocals, frame drumming, movement, and some gestural theatre games. This is a space where life meets art, meets embodied prayer..
No previous singing or drumming experience is required. This is not about performance or sounding good. The practice of community music is about intention, presence, playfulness, and community care.
This practice is for folks who identify as women, and non-binary folks who resonate with the Feminine Principle. We are drawing from the lineage of frame drum choreutic practices of ancient women and ‘TRANSestors’ of the Mediterranean Basin, especially from Southern Italy and Sicily. I come to this practice with a heart of devotion and ritual intention-setting. I draw on the strength of generations of Grandmothers, Aunts, Mothers, Sisters, and Feminielli* of old who tended the sacred threshold places for their communities with voice, rhythm, dance, circle.
*Feminielli are Sacred Gender or Third Gender folk in the deep roots of Naples, celebrated with ‘n’gopp’o tammurro’ (Campania tammurriate). Mamma Schiavona is their protectress, and Cybele before Her.
